Mud Caves in Arroyo Tapiado Anza Borrego State Park 6AM to 5PM, Saturday, May 26, 2012

The mud caves at Arroyo Tapiado (Spanish for "walled wash") are some of the most extensive mud cave systems of this type in the world. There are 22 known caves and 9 slot canyons in the area. Some of the caves extend back hundreds of with ceilings 3 stories tall. They were formed 5 million years ago. There have been fossils found here from pre-historic mammoth, lamas, and horses. Scouts that attend this hike should be prepared to get dirty. Some of the caves will require you to crawl on your belly through the different passage ways. These caves can get very narrow.
Scouts will need to bring their 10 essentials along with a flashlight (headlamp preferably), extra batteries, clothes and shoes that you will get dirty (these are MUD caves), helmets (hard hats are recommended), and a strong sense of adventure.
OA members from Aca will serve as the trail guides. Troops that wish to participate in this hike will need to file their own touring plan and have adult leaders trained for this type of outing (i.e. hazardous weather training, etc.).
